American Style Foxtrot
Promenade w/ Underarm Turn to Left
12. Promenade w/ Underarm Turn to Left
Fact Sheet
Official Name:Promenade w/ Underarm Turn to Left
Dance / Level:Intermediate Bronze American Style Foxtrot
Aliases:Underarm Turn to Left from Promenade, Inside Underarm Turn
Suggested
Prerequisites:
None

The Promenade with Underarm Turn to Left is a version of the Promenade where the man leads the lady to dance an underarm turn as he dances his chasse on the "quick-quick" counts, following the two walks in promenade ("slow, slow"). Unlike its right-turning cousin, the Promenade with Underarm turn to Left actually finishes in closed position, and is therefore not an immediately repeatable pattern.

The lady's turn begins as CBM on the end of the second step, as it would in a normal Promenade when the lady closes to the man. From there, she will complete 1 full turn under the raised LH-RH hold between the end of the second step and the beginning of the fourth, traveling along line of dance throughout. She then pivots an additional 3/8 on her left foot on the final step, finishing backing diagonally to the wall. The couple then resumes closed position between the end of the fourth step and the first step of the following figure.

The underarm turn can be taken with 1/8 less or 1/8 more turn than the normal amount -- a total of 1 & 1/4 or 1 & 1/2 to left for lady. The man turns accordingly to end in closed position, either 1/8 to right if the underarm turn is underturned, or 1/8 to left if it is overturned. As well, the Promenade with Underarm Turn to Left can be taken along line of dance as shown, or moving toward diagonal wall, diagonal center, or straight to center (traffic permitting). When combined with the variations of amounts of turn, this provides a multitude of beginning and ending alignments. As always, care should be taken to move with the flow of traffic.

The underarm turn finishes in closed position with the man's left foot free, facing diagonal wall (but can also finish facing wall, diagonal center, or center, depending on direction of travel and total amount of turn). So it can be followed by most bronze syllabus figures beginning in closed. Preferred figures are those that turn to the left, such as Left Box Turn, or LF Forward Change O.P. The Hesitation Left Turn is also popular as a follow.

More advanced Bronze dancers can substitute step 1 of Promenade with steps 1-3 of the Twinkle, resulting in a figure of 6 steps taken to the counts "SQQ, SQQ".
