11. Back Whisk
Fact Sheet
Official Name:Back Whisk
Dance / Level:Intermediate Bronze Slow Waltz
Suggested
Prerequisites:
Whisk

The Back Whisk is one of only three ways to achieve promenade position in the Bronze syllabus. Whereas the basic (forward) Whisk begins with the man stepping forward, the Back Whisk gets its name because the man's first step is back.

The man begins backing diagonal center against line of dance, and steps back in CBMP, then diagonally back, and finishes by crossing his left foot behind his right in promenade position, facing diagonal wall, achieving the final, characteristic position of the Whisk.

The lady takes her first step forward in CBMP, outside partner on the man's right side. She then steps side, turning around the man to end facing diagonal center in promenade position. The end position is identical to that of the basic (forward) Whisk.

Although the Back Whisk is most often danced beginning with lady outside partner, it is also possible to begin with man and lady in-line, in which case the first step is not taken in CBMP. This would follow the first 3 steps of a Natural Turn at a corner, man stepping side & slightly back on step 2, and would turn 3/8 more than the normal Back Whisk -- 3/8 to right for man, 5/8 to right for lady. This is considered a Silver level amalgamation.
