1. Closed Changes
Fact Sheet
Official Name:Closed Changes
Dance / Level:Full Bronze Viennese Waltz
Aliases:Closed Forward Changes, Forward Change Steps, Progressive Changes, LF & RF Closed Changes
Suggested
Prerequisites:
None

Closed Changes are a pair of figures in both Slow Waltz and Viennese Waltz that consist of three steps, used to transition from Reverse Turns to Natural Turns and vice versa. In the Slow Waltz, the man's part consists of a simple forward-side-close action (lady having the natural opposite), but in Viennese Waltz, the speed of the dance results in so much body flight and forward momentum that the second step is taken more forward than sideways, curving naturally to the left or right.

Although the primary purpose of the Closed Changes is to act as a transition between two turns, many Closed Changes can also be danced in succession. It is not very common to do in practical application, but multiple consecutive Closed Changes can be a useful exercise to learn various aspects of Viennese Waltz movement.

1a. Closed Change - Natural to Reverse

The Forward Change on the man's right foot typically follows a Natural Turn, and is used to transition to the Reverse Turn.

Following a Natural Turn, the man begins facing diagonal center and takes three steps: (1) Right foot forward, (2) left foot forward, curving to right, and (3) closing the right foot, having taken a total of 1/8 turn to right to end facing line of dance. From there, his left foot is free to begin either the Reverse Turn or the LF Closed Change (Reverse to Natural). The lady's part is the natural opposite, starting with her left foot back.

1b. Closed Change - Reverse to Natural

The Forward Change on the man's left foot typically follows a Reverse Turn, and is used to transition to the Natural Turn.

Following a Reverse Turn, the man begins facing line of dance and takes three steps: (1) Left foot forward, (2) right foot forward, curving to left, and (3) closing the left foot, having taken a total of 1/8 turn to left to end facing diagonal center. From there, his right foot is free to begin either the Natural Turn or the RF Closed Change (Reverse to Natural). The lady's part is the natural opposite, starting with her right foot back.
