American Style Rumba
Alternative Cross-Body Lead
11b. Alternative Cross-Body Lead

The Alternative Cross-Body Lead is also taken to slow-quick-quick timing, but the pattern and the counts line up in a way that is different than the normal Box-style Cross-Body Lead. The Alternative Cross-Body Lead stems from the Alternative Basic, and much more closely resembles the version used in Cha Cha or Mambo.

Following the second half of an Alternative Basic (slow, quick quick), the man turns 1/4 to left to dance a side step to left, while leading the lady to dance a forward step in the same direction (slow). On this forward step, she remains at a right angle to the man in cross-body position, toward his right side. He then takes his back rock, causing her to step in front of him and pivot 1/2 to left (quick, quick). He turns 1/4 to left, and they end in closed position to take the final side step (slow).

The Alternative Cross-Body Lead can be danced in closed hold, or in open position with a one- or two-hand hold. In open position it is sometimes called an Alternative Side Pass. It can be repeated as desired.
