ok.for start sorry for my bad english i hope that you understend. my age is 14.and i dance in israel. my problm that i am afraid in competition be bad.and that reson that i dance bad in competition! what i make do to be relax in compition
Practice will help. But the only practice that is exactly like dancing in competitions is dancing in competitions - so do as many of them as you can. It may be easier if you compete a lot before you have high expectations - you can gain confidence by not being terrible. Then as your skills improve, you will already have confidence that you can do your best in competition.
Right on Anon !!! There is no better practice than comps. What we often do to make ourselves nervous is to lose focus. What I mean is, we are looking at the huge crowd or we are marveling at the colors of the competitors costumes or we are looking at the other competitors warm ups and so it goes. What helps is to keep telling yourself that you belong here and you do know your stuff and you dont care where you place but rather that you do what you know as well as you can. All of the above.Plus. There is a coach who teaches . Don`t worry about things you have no controll over. The audience, the floor, the music . The judges.. Concentrate on something you do have controll over and that is your steps your performance. Practise practise and practise again. Don`t chop and change your routine about by adding new peices. Unless it has been practise for about three months at varing speeds and under supervision.
Try to have fun dancing! If you think only about not making mistakes, the good parts of your dancing won't show as well. Think about what you do well and how good it feels to do those parts of your dance.
Practice your technique by yourself to get that down and be able to do your routine by yourself with an imaginary parnter. When you are competeting try to focus on your partner and your dancing. Try to relate, smile or someway connect to your partner and your dancing. Pretend you are in a bubble together--helps keep you mind off the judges.
Dance a few competitive dances like Int. Standard--only--not 10 dances. Get your routine or 1 1/2 minute loops or routines down and do it with a variety of music. Do some local showcases to help your nerves. Practice your routines over and over--you may have to vary them some due to floorcraft. It appears that you just need more preparatation and experience. It helps if you have a compatable partner and a good coach too.
I did a unrehearsed competition a year ago with a partner that I have been dancing with on and off for 3 years. We were unreheased and it showed. We make mistakes and the judges saw it too. So, be prepared-and do as many public performances and competitions that you can to gain experience and confidence.
