Hello everyone,

I'm doing a graphic design project about dance and I'm interested to know what the WORST part of taking dance lessons or being a dancer is? Let me know :) x

Probably the worst part of taking dance lessons is the initial fear of getting started. Then once you start expecting too much too soon. Practice, practice, practice makes for good progression, even if you have no dance partner to practice with i.e. doing the patterns solo. You could spend 50 hours on practicing rumba's cuban motion in the box step (once you get the jest of it from an instructor) and then soon thereafter incorporate it into the rest of the rumba patterns you've learned. Then the hip motion would come easier to learn in the merengue, cha cha, salsa, & bachata.

The worst part of being a dancer is not enjoying ballroom dancing to the fullest... with the progressions you've made. They'll always be better dancers than you at whatever level dancer you become and it can be easy to be dis-content / envious of others. Enjoy the moments and be thankful for them all.

For the leader: followers who grip my fingers, followers who don't engage in the movement, followers who don't maintain tone.

For the follower: leaders who pull on the arms, leaders who don't move their body, leaders who contact the no-go areas.

It's when you are a beginner and you are scared to dance with other people say if you were girls you are nervous to dance with a boy and if you are a girl you are nervous to dance with a boy.

Feeling like everyone but you understands a new figure and that somehow the instructor just started speaking a foreign language. Then you bite your lip, fight back the tears and remember eventually it will make sense, and just keep trying.

That's something I would have said too. I'm a bit of a perfectionist so I get frustrated very easily.

Varies with person, but for me worst part is not doing the advised 2-3 hours of practice PER hour of dance instruction/lesson. Without that committment you are not benefiting/maximizing your learning capability.

We have done that pretty much religiously (Im not religious, LOL), but its starting to taper off.

The worst part of dance when I FIRST started working smooth, was giving up control - trusting my male partner had my back and would not run me into anything/anyone.

When I became comfortable with this and wanted to move beyond social dancing what was really difficult was learn proper technique, the step patterns, keeping the foot work small. I always felt like I had a giant arm full of small rubber balls that represented everything. I was always dropping a few no matter what I did. However, as time went by the basics were ingrained into muscle memory. I had fewer and fewer of those rubber balls to hold on to/worry about.

You know what IS great? When you helping in a beginner group class and your instructor asks you to do some dance move improperly - and you just can not do it your body will not allow it!

I have another one: not being able to dance as much as you want to! Maybe you don't have a partner, or there aren't many opportunities in your community, or you're trying to recover from an injury, or it's just a bit too expensive right then. I'm finally feeling comfortable enough to get out and dance more, but circumstances are making it a bit tough. So you go from "I can't dance" to "I sort of know how to dance, but too scared to do it" to "I CAN dance, but I now can't do it."
