I agree. To set your sights on a world championship is unrealistic. I have been dancing for 20 years and am only just beginning to be recognised as a champion and choreographer in my area. I dream of being world reknowned....

Your goal could be attained. When I was in high school in the late 70s, I competed in wrestling, and I was real good. One year, a young man came into the local scene who had never competed before, and he was phenomenal! He was born for it. Upon graduation, like many of my peers, I was already physically beat up from years of near brutal training. The young man I mention went on to be one of the world's best ever. He won Olympic gold, etc. His name is Mark Schultz. He moved fluidly. Watching him was akin to watching a very graceful dancer. And he got a late start.

If you really like it, then just go for it, later in life you don't wanna regret over the things you didn't do. There's always a room for you to be great. However, you need to be aware of the upcoming challenges you might encounter along the way. You have to make sacrifices (grueling dance hours, no social life etc) and you need to be a thick-skinned person because believe me, a lot of people will think it's impossible. But don't worry, if you read stories from some of the most amazing people in the world, they started with people telling them that their dreams were unrealistic. Just keep working on it & who knows you will surprise us in the future by proving to the world that you can turn the impossible to become possible ;)

It's never too late to start dancing, but you would seriously be at a huge disadvantage compared to everyone else that's already been dancing. Also you have to remember there's only one world champion in, so that will take a lot of work. Just remember dancing isn't just for the competition it's for the amazing fun and entertainment in it too!

I think the point was it may a bit unrealistic to set sights on becoming a world champion at that age. There is never a correct age to start dancing! And 22 is still young!

There is an over-35 amateur world title, and someone who starts training at age 22 might be about ideally positioned to try to win that soon after becoming eligible. They would have enough time to fully develop, but might be a less likely than someone who competed from childhood to turn pro or retire before reaching that age.

you are not too old to start dancing i started very late in life and love it more than anything .I have done some competitions in the pro am division and recommend it to all ages. For inspiration try reading Dance With Me by Barbara Elaine Boddy available at Amazon. I think you will see after reading it you can do anything if you want it enough. Good luck

I don't know for sure(i cant find out anywhere), but I heard that Maxim Kozhevnikov was a young adult when he started(I heard 20 I think). He went on to be in the world pro final. Ether way, there are a few world champions that have had a late start, and tons of couples that have had remarkable improvements in short time periods. I am not sure exactly how old Jonathan Wilkins was when he retired(ballroom dancers are not always open about things like age), but I think it was early forties. Really I would like to say that age doesn't matter but even at your age it's hard to say it's impossible. Can anyone really say that twenty years is not enough time to become a world champion?
The thing is, reviewing past world champions views, most of them didn't set out to be a world champion. It's about wanting to become skillful. If you want to be an awesome ballroom dancer, go and become awesome. Achieving the skill is success. The result is external. There are so many reasons why seeking becoming a champion doesn't make sense. If you live by the judges mark then your life is theirs, not your own. You don't have to be good to be a "winner". You only have to be "better" than everyone else. And if that is what you seek then again your life is not your own, it belongs to those who you desire to conquer. You don't want to HAVE to practice to be better than others. You should want to practice because you love dancing.
If you do decide that ballroom dancing is something that you want to pursue in your life the most important thing you need is a mentor, a coach. Not someone who just gives you lessons but someone who teaches you how to pursue ballroom; what competitions to dance, what lessons to take, what you can do to have a good relationship with your partner. This process can take a lifetime if you are wandering about. It takes careful guidance to learn these skills. Don't become discouraged. You will become great if you desire. Good luck on the journey and don't forget to keep the desire alive.
