You will most likely need to check into find a sports doctor that does hip replacements. YES you can come back and dance after a hip replacement. Mark Cuban owner of the Mavericks Basketball team had one and was on the floor with Dancing With The Stars TV show. His surgeon works on all kinds of sport pros. My instructor just had his hip replaced with this guy on April 28, 2014. He is set to be released to come back to the dance floor on June 16, 2014.

Key is to do everything your surgeon tells you as well as the PTs tell you. Work through the pain in rehab, (it WILL get better) do if you are able to push and do a few more reps then do so.

I know quite a few others who have had hip replacements and are back on the dance floor.

Hi Ballroomchick. Many thanks for taking the trouble to reply to my Help.As you can em agin I feel very low at this time ,have not really had time to get over the shock. I will try very hard to do every thing the Physo tells me,bit like taking dancing lessons I suppose.Regarding the surgeon ,I'm afraid over hear unless you have medical insurance, which I haven't ,you take what you are given and have to trust to luck.Still I suppose I have been lucky in life, next month is our Diamond Wedding Anniversary ,60years,and still dance partners, how lucky is that?

I know a lady in her very late 70s who recently had hip replacement surgery, and she just returned to her tap dance class. The tap dance group she is in competes (average age of the group is about 80).

Also, just a tip about working with your physical therapist: TELL your PT what your goal is - show him/her some dance photos and TELL the PT THAT is what you need to get back to. Some people taking physical therapy want to do only enough to get in and out of their recliner chair and click through channels on the TV. TELL your PT that you want to do more than that - the PT may be delighted that you've got some plans to do things!

Good luck with your recovery.

Cannot really help you with dancers in your age bracket. I had my second hip replacement a year ago, at the age of 67. It certainly was harder to recover than my first surgery 10 years ago. My suggestion is to do a lot of walking. I started the day I got home, walking some 50' and back. After 4 weeks, I was up to 1/4 mile, twice a day. I hit the dance floor at 6 weeks. Started slowly and tried to build up as quickly as my body would let me. At 6 months, I was dancing in my first competition after surgery. Didn't do too well, but I did try, but we changed our routines to eliminate sudden, twisting moves, that put a strain on my hip. At 9 months, I was in my second competition after surgery and did pretty good, not quite up to my standards before surgery, but really close, dancing to my complete routines. Later this year, I am planning on another competition. My legs feel really good.

Your dancing experience should help you recover quicker. It takes a while for your muscles to settle back after the surgery. Plus, you really have to watch what moves you do to avoid sudden twisting motions to your hip until you have recovered sufficiently.

Thanks Waynelee. Nice of you to take an interest. Am still waiting to see consultant and may have to wait up to18weeks after that for surgery ,that's if they accept me within the National Health System.
In the meantime I will be going to my local gym to try and get myself fitter than I am now.
I will certainly try to follow your advice. Happy dancing to you
