first competition

I am new to the world of ballroom dancing and have a child that is interested in competing in the
pro/am division.

How do you decided when it is time to do your first competition? What level of mastery should first be achieved? Are you better off waiting until your skills are stellar before competing or grow into it?

What does it cost to compete? All of the studios seem to charge different amounts? Why?
Can you register for a competition directly? Are the fees different?

What other things do you wish that you would have known the first time out?
