3b. Underarm Turns to R & L

Underarm Turns are simply Spot Turns danced by the lady under a raised LH-RH hold, while the man dances a Basic Movement. The lady will dance her Spot Turn to left as the man takes his forward break, and she will dance her Spot Turn to right as he takes his back break.

The hand hold is the same for either turn: Man's left hand to lady's right. However, each turn is slightly different.

To lead the left turn, the man should lift his left hand and elbow to lady's eye level. He should then pass the hand between their faces and around her head with a small circular motion in a counter-clockwise direction. Although the man must lift his elbow to provide space for the lady, she should not lift hers.

To lead the right turn, the man should take his left hand to her eye level and slightly outward. He should then pass the hand around her head with a small circular motion in a clockwise direction. It is unnecessary for the man or lady to lift the elbow; It should remain relaxed at a downward angle from the hand.

Although shown consecutively, either of these Underarm Turns can be taken individually, being preceded or followed by other figures as described below.
