4. Closed Changes Backward
Fact Sheet
Official Name:Closed Changes Backward
Dance / Level:Silver Viennese Waltz
Aliases:Closed Backward Changes, Backward Change Steps, Progressive Changes Back, LF & RF Closed Changes Backward
Suggested
Prerequisites:
Closed Changes (Forward)

Closed Changes are figures in both Slow Waltz and Viennese Waltz that consist of three steps, used to transition from Reverse Turns to Natural Turns and visa versa. The Closed Changes Backward are a version of Closed Change that begin with the man stepping back (lady forward). They are taken after the first 3 steps of either a Natural or Reverse Turn.

Although the primary purpose of the Closed Changes is to act as a transition between two turns, many Closed Changes can also be danced in succession. It is not very common to do in practical application, but multiple consecutive Closed Changes can be a useful exercise to learn various aspects of Viennese Waltz movement.

4a. Closed Changes Back - Natural to Reverse

The Backward Change on the man's left foot typically follows the first 3 steps of a Natural Turn, and is used to transition to the Reverse Turn.

Following 1-3 of Natural Turn, the man begins backing diagonal center and takes three steps: (1) Left foot back, (2) right foot back, curving to right, and (3) closing the left foot, having taken a total of 1/8 turn to right to end backing line of dance. From there, his right foot is free to begin steps 4-6 of the Reverse Turn or the RF Closed Backward Change (Reverse to Natural). The lady's part is the natural opposite, starting with her right foot forward.

4b. Closed Changes Back - Reverse to Natural

The Backward Change on the man's right foot typically follows the first 3 steps of a Reverse Turn, and is used to transition to the Natural Turn.

Following 1-3 of Reverse Turn, the man begins backing line of dance and takes three steps: (1) Right foot back, (2) left foot back, curving to left, and (3) closing the right foot, having taken a total of 1/8 turn to left to end backing diagonal center. From there, his left foot is free to begin steps 4-6 of the Natural Turn or the LF Closed Backward Change (Natural to Reverse). The lady's part is the natural opposite, starting with her left foot forward.
