11. Back Rocks
Fact Sheet
Official Name:Back Rocks
Dance / Level:Full Bronze Tango
Aliases:Rock Steps Back on LF and RF
Suggested
Prerequisites:
Rock Turn, Any Reverse Turn

Back Rocks are simple figures consisting of 3 steps each. They are composed of a single backward rocking action followed by a back walk, taken in closed position to the counts "QQS". Back Rocks can begin on either foot, and repeated as desired, each time alternating the starting foot.

The LF Back Rock (LRL) is typically taken with a left side leading for man. The lady's part is natural opposite, so she dances a Forward Rock (RLR) with a right side leading.

The RF Back Rock (RLR) is typically taken in CBMP for both man and lady. Here, too, she dances the natural opposite: A Forward Rock (LRL).

Back Rocks can be danced anywhere in place of a Closed Finish. Or more accurately, they are typically injected in between any figure and its Closed Finish. For example, a RF and LF Back Rock can be danced after steps 1-3 of the Open Reverse Turn, and followed by the Closed or Open Finish. Other typical precedes of the RF Back Rock include step 1 of a Back Corté, 1-5 of Rock Turn, and the Progressive Side Step Reverse Turn. It is also common to follow the RF Back Rock with a Back Corté.

Back Rocks are taken without turn, steps 1 and 3 moving down line of dance. When following the Back Rock on LF with a Closed or Open Finish, there should be 1/8 turn to left between the last step of the Rock and the first step of the Finish, so that the first step of the Finish moves toward diagonal center.

In closed position with lady in-line, the first step of the LF Back Rock is typically taken with a man's left side (and lady's right side) leading. However, there are two occasions where the figure could begin with lady forward in CBMP, outside partner: (1) Following a checked Open Finish, and (2) following a checked Open Promenade. In this case the LF Back Rock will be taken toward diagonal center against line of dance, to be followed by a Closed or Open Finish turning 1/4 to end with man facing diagonal center (or diagonal wall of new line of dance).
