American Style Tango
Natural Turn from Promenade
26. Natural Turn from Promenade

The Natural Promenade, also known as Open Promenade, Man Around Lady, is the right-turning version of Open Promenade. Like it's counterpart, the Natural Promenade is a 6-count pattern, and therefore must be combined with other patterns in order to fit the pronounced 2 bar / 8-count phrasing of Tango music.

This figure begins like most promenade movements in Tango, with two walks in promenade position. Between the second and third step, the man turns to the right to pass in front of the lady in closed position. The last step is RF back (man), LF forward (lady), with the same side leading.

The first step of the following figure is normally taken back on the man's LF while the lady steps forward RF, outside partner on man's right side. In the bronze level, this can be the beginning of a Natural Tango Close, an Outside Swivel, or steps 3-6 of an Open Left Turn.

Alternatively, if step 4 of the Natural Promenade is checked, the following figure can begin with man's LF forward (lady RF back) against line of dance, as long as care is taken to move only briefly in that direction. Typical figures to follow are (1) a LF Rock, turning 1/4 to left, then Tango Basic, curving to face line of dance, and (2) 1-4 of Rock & Corte or Open Left Turn to Outside Swivel, turning 3/8 to L. to end facing diagonal wall. Each of these options results in a 16-beat phrase.

26b. Natural Turn to Quick Tango Close

The Natural Promenade when followed by a Natural Tango Close can be danced with a slight variation in timing, so that the combination fits neatly into a single 2-bar / 8-count phrase. This is an easy way for the beginning student to learn the Natural Promenade with a simple 8-count structure.
