Dances to the beat of a different drummer.

I was told a number of years ago (~20) by a dear friend that I danced with that I did not dance to the same 'beat/rhythm' as most people.

That friend has since died and I haven't ballroom danced in about 15 years.

My question is: What do most people dance to? The rhythm, melody or what and what is it that is part of the music that I may have been dancing too? This has been bugging me for years. Thanks to anyone who can answer.

The melody is for the expression of the dance, not to determine the beat of the steps. The beat is in the bass line and it takes practice to hear it. My teacher used to say that the bass line immitates the heart beating.
