I have been a ballet dancer my whole life and recently got into salsa. I am looking for a place to buy shoes that are very good quality near Huntington Beach, CA. I haven't had any luck finding a store near me. Also, what are the best brands for salsa shoes? What should I be looking for in a good shoe- satin or leather, suede bottom or not, cushion or no cushion? Any info on shoes for women would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I live in MI, but have the same problem. Our closest good dance shoe store is an hour drive away. I have been buying online for the 3 years that I have been ballroom dancing, and here is what I have found:
My favorite brand is an Italian brand called Dance Naturals. Very expensive but beautiful, flexible shoes, very high quality.
Two popular brands that a lot of pros wear are International and Supadance. In my opinion they both start a little rigid, but they get better.
I've never worn Ray Rose, but I've seen many top latin competitors in them.
I'm not a fan of the off-brand, slightly less expensive shoes because I just don't think they have the support. My favorite sites to buy on are Showtime Dance shoes and Dance America. And, yes, I admit I've spent a lot on shipping when the shoes don't work out, but I like all of the choices online.

I don't go to too many salsa clubs anymore, but I really liked wearing suede-bottomed ballroom shoes. I think you will too.

Do have any ballroom dance studios near you? They might sell shoes or be able to order some in for you. I would go with suede soles for sure. They give you the control you need to spin quickly and stop quickly. Satin does not last as long as leather. Cushioned shoes are very comfortable when you're on your feet for a long period of time. No matter what brand, make sure they are comfortable above all. Some cheaper shoes are more comfortable than the expensive brands, depending on your feet's shape. Ray Rose are narrow and I can't wear them at all. I have a very well fitting shoe by Ballroom USA. American made and good quality.

I am a compatition dancer and I get my shoes at shopdancesport.com I like their shoes they are comfortable, durable, and don't cost an arm and a leg. You might want to give 'um a try. Although satin is very popular with ladies (as you can get a tan satin shoe that goes with anything) leather can conform to your foot more feeling more natural. So it depends on personal taste. I definitely recommended going with suede bottom it gives you just the right amount of grip. Not too much that you cant move and not so little you slip and fall. Go with a shoe with cushion you feet with thank you the ones I recommend above have cushioning and you will feel the difference. Additionally, look at the sizes closely. Although shopdancesport.com 's shoes are true US sizes many places sell shoes that are listed in UK sizes or other sizes. Hope this Helps.
