Hi

Our local club is organising a ballroom dancing night for charirt and would appreciate suggestions of current chart music to use for the waltz & jive

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated

Regards

I am afraid my tastes reside in the last century. However, I think Alesha Dixon "The Boy does nothing" might help out with your Jive (not sure if it is an international hit)

If you don't mind some classics
"Put you together again" by Hot Chocolate, "Sam" by Olivia Newton John and "Dark Waltz" by Hayley Westenra are worth considering in the Waltz section.

"Crazy little thing called love" by Michael Buble is a classic jive revived by a more recent performer.

I again am into the classic stuff. A waltz would be 'if you don't know me by now,' or 'it is you I have loved' (Dana Glover) or the classic 'Fascination' by Nat King Cole.

For a jive you can't beat 'Jailhouse Rock' or 'Reach' by S Club 7 for a bit of fun. If you want a performance then 'hit the road Jack' is excellent.

Hope this helps a lot. :)

The Boy Does Nothing (Dixon) makes a very successful Mambo (and is popular in the UK with Sequence Dancers, who otherwise wouldn't dance Mambo at all), but I'm not sure that it would work very well as Jive.

Like most people here I like the classics and the standards. I think you'll find most of us are that way.

The boy does nothing does work well as a jive.

The Cherry Popping Daddys and The Big Bad Voodoo Daddys have some great stuff that is fairly current for retakes on standards.

There are waltzes everywhere in the slower modern music. Look for something in slower tempo and almost universally you will be able to apply the music to a slow waltz, a rumba, or a foxtrot. Those musical tempos are pleasing to the human ear so they are used over and over again whether the writer intends to make his music danceable or not.

You've already gotten some good suggestions. Here is another for Waltz: The Godfather Waltz (also called Vito's Waltz). Henry Mancini has an outstanding version of the song--very slow, but beautiful.
