Cheilectomy?

Not sure which forum this belongs in-

I've been told I need a cheilectomy for a bone spur in my big toe and am terrified the surgery will mean the end of competitive ballroom dancing for me. I'm an amateur and have been dancing just over 2 years, but it's the most important thing in the world to me- I can't imagine not being able to do it.

Has anyone else had any experience with this surgery? Any success stories?
Thanks-
A little research may help.

I have been fortunate to suffer no foot problems other than some callouses and the occasional broken toe.

I did a search on "cheilectomy recovery" and found that there are experiences documented on various sites over the past few years. I;d encourage you to do the same.

Have you had this discussion with your surgeon? He or she should be able to put you in touch with other patients who may be willing to share their recovery experiences.

Also, you should get a second opinion.

I have an older dancing friend who suffered with a neuroma for years but kept putting off surgery due to the same fears that you have. Eventually, she developed back problems from favoring the sore foot (you can't say that you won't favor it; doing so is not a conscious action).

She wound up having both back surgery and foot surgery. The good news is that she's dancing again.

Good luck.

Research and questions to your surgeon as suggested are a great idea. From people I know who have had this surgery, and of course everyone is different, have had a full recovery and are dancing still.

Good Luck!

Thanks for the feedback.
I have had a few consultations and done a lot of research online; most of what I read is not very encouraging.
Was hoping to get a 'dancer's perspective' since we use our feet a little differently than the average person.
Glad to hear you know someone who's had the surgery and been able to return to dancing- that's hopeful.

I'm very curious to know how your surgery went. I'm facing the same dilemma and the research is so varied. I got a cortisone shot today so we"ll see how it responds. I am a dancer currently in a contract til Dec and I want to return to work - 8 shows a week!!

All the Best
