No way does the man's left knee face forward in promenade position in Tango. You have control (to lead) and power (to move forcefully) by having her knee between your knees and, yes, somewhat inward. In part it looks inward because your right foot (and her left foot) will be angled toward the direction you are will be traveling in promenade. Is that helpful at all?
