dheu. If you read Jonathan's writting. He will also tell you that there is no breaking of hold. This includes an underarm turn or type of. Hip to hip is the key element.
Read and understand when Jonathan writes. Any American Style dancer who doesn't have a solid background in Standard will not make it very far in the competition cicuit. And so say all of us. Regards.

and he also has some other very interesting comments about several other current dance " happenings ".

Dropping the arms to avoid elbowing someone else as he advocated has nothing to do with the "breaking the hold" that was being discussed here.

Don't let us get side tracked here. The original question was concerning the breaking of hold as is in American Smooth and is this done in the International Style of Ballroom Dancing Standard. I think Jonathan answed this one clear enough.
dheu. In the International Style the breaking of hold is not allowed. I think by this time you already know that.
