International latin vs Am. Rhythm

I do both (mainly Cha and Rumba) Int. Latin and Am Rhythm. I know that the music has different tempos and in Int. Rumba you break on 2 vs. 1 in Am Rumba. You step with a straight leg vs. bent leg. However some Am Rhy. dancers are now using a straight leg. The syllabus patterns are different. So, why could't one use Int. Latin technique for Am. Cha and Rumba? I see compeitors dancing Am Rhy with Int. technique. If I do this will I get marked down by judges in competitions?

If I were you I would ask as many of the judges that I could find and put the question to them. You have every right to do so, so why not. You might be doing everyone a favour. I would ask straight out. Do you consider it a fault to have straight knees in the Rumba and the Cha Cha. If that didn' t work I would write to whichever dance society you belong to and get a ruling. If writing. Address it to the President and don't forget to sign it and date it. If it is addressed to the Dance Society only, you have sent it to the tea boy or cleaner or everybody in that Society. Which could result in it being ignored. Ref. number also.

It all depends on the individual judge.

Some will say, "that looks nice and sharp"

Others will say, "that is NOT rhythm"
