you put your foot forward and lock/slide the other one behind i see all ballroom dancers do it?

It's a lock step. It's use in the Latin dances can be described better by others on who contribute on this site.

iloveslavk. The correct name for what some wrongly call a Lock Step is a actually a Latin Cross
