Could offer you a load of tips, but do you want general tips or personal tips? For the latter it would be hard to advise wothout actually having seen you dance.

So true, Terence. I have made good progress over the years primarily due to the competance of 2 particular instructors, and I NEVER could I have done so without them.

I may also add that he has to hire not just a competent teacher to teach the correct steps but also a teacher who can teach the proper body movements. I am speaking from my own experience. I know so many steps of almost all the dances but I lacked the proper body movements, so I hired a professional teacher who is really really good on body movements and I became a FABULOUS DANCER, I think, and my friends told me so.

Good Luck!

I like reviewing dance videos of specific dances. After reviewing the videos, practice in front of a mirror or just practice without a mirror. This helps develop the mind body connection. Once again, review the video now that you have some muscle memory.
There are also books like Alex Moore's which is used by most professional teachers.

It's no good knowing you have not achieved success, you need to know what success is and why you might not have achived it. A good teacher will tell you what you need to know.

Remember our type of dance is a partner dance, you need to be sensitive to your partner and give clear leads for the steps you want to do. Dancing is meant to be enjoyable (for both participants) and simple steps led well will be your first step on the path to success. The frame you present to your partner coupled with the body positions mentioned above are key items.
