Make others happy or make myself happy.

Hey all,

I have been competing for about 5 years here in Australia, dancing all 3 styles (Standard, Latin & New Vogue) and have been quite successful in all 3. However as time progresses, I have found that I am no longer having fun in Latin, but still want to dance the other 2 styles, as they are my preference. I also realize that by dropping the Latin style, I would be making a lot of people, especially my coaches very unhappy, seeing as though they have poured so much into me and expect me to continue on with the Latin. I know it's impossible to keep everyone happy, but I would just like some opinions on how to deal with this situation.

I assume that you pay your coach? You dance, train and compete for yourself, not for your coach, to whom you owe nothing (except possibly money, but then they tend not to extend credit ...).

When you find what truly makes you happy, do that. Anything less is a waste of time. Good luck!

I dropped latin and how I dealt with it was that I announced that I was no longer going to compete in latin. I did not consult or apologize. I compete in the pro-am division so there was no partner to talk to. Your coaches should respect your decision and not pressure you to do anything you don't want. I don't know who else is in your group of ' a lot of people' but they shouldn't matter. We dance for the joy of dancing when it becomes a chore, it's time to stop.

Thank you all for your advice. It's been something that has been at the back of my mind for some time and having been push become shove, it has been brought to the front of my mind. It's now very clear on what I should do, thanks again.
