Rythms of different genres

Hi All,

I'm glad I have the chance to benefit from this forum and I hope others will benefit from (the answer to) my question as well.

When I hear music, I cannot always tell what type of music it is. So, I'm looking for a simple table that displays the music genre (example: tango, waltz, east cost swing, etc.), the characteristic rhythm of that genre (with info on the stressed beat), and related range of tempo. I think that such info would be helpful to many people.

Thanks and best regards,

Just a thought. When I was new to ballroom I would sometimes have a hard time but if I closed my eyes and let my body move to what it wanted to do naturally I could figure out what the music was because I would find myself doing a rumba box...or a feather step or a cha cha basic.

Also please note that one song may lend itself to many different dances. It is why you can get disagreement from some of us when you ask us what dance should be done to a particular song. Or why some of the nuevo tango songs end up being used as rumba songs. It is frowned on by some embraced by others.

Give it some time and keep listening....try counting out loud...and it will eventually become second nature.

"When I hear music, I cannot always tell what type of music it is"

There's a very helpful resource for that hiding in plain site right on this website: the Music Store. It's organized by dance, and you can hear 30 second samples of each song, so you can go listen to lots and lots of tracks knowing what they are supposed to be, and becoming familiar with how they sound.
