Slow Waltz
Chasse from Promenade Position
6. Chasse from Promenade Position
Fact Sheet
Official Name:Chasse from Promenade Position
Dance / Level:Beginning Bronze Slow Waltz
Aliases:Chasse from PP, Promenade Chasse
Suggested
Prerequisites:
Whisk

The Chassé from Promenade consists of 4 steps danced over 3 beats of music. The figure begins in promenade position, with the inside foot free for both man and lady. The first step is taken in promenade. The lady then turns to close to the man between the first and second step. Both man and lady close their feet on the third step, lady finishing her turn to end backing diagonal wall. The forth step is taken with man side & slightly forward, facing diagonal wall, lady side & slightlly back, backing diagonal wall. The man is then prepared to step outside partner on the first step of the following figure.

The Chassé from Promenade Position introduces the student to syncopated timing. Prior to the Chassé, all figures in the syllabus were taken with straight timing, with one step having been taken on each beat of music. Syncopated timing means that some beats will be subdivided with two or more steps, a common feature of dances such as the Cha Cha and Jive. In the Waltz Chassé from Promenade Position, 4 steps are "squeezed" into three beats, with the second beat having two steps. The duration, or beat values of each step is:

  • Step 1: Whole beat
  • Step 2: Half beat
  • Step 3: Half beat
  • Step 4: Whole beat

When the figure is counted, the resulting timing is 1, 2&3.
